I wanted to write a blog on a subject that fascinates me and that’s motivation. What motivates you to reach your goals? What gets you to the gym early in the morning when you could just stay in bed longer? Why is it some days we are super motivated and other days we struggle to get our shit together?
There are lots of reasons why we sometimes lack motivation. The cold winter nights make us want to stay indoors and the dark mornings can make it harder to get up. Sometimes we have a rubbish day at work and just want to go home and relax with a glass of wine and bag of malteasers. If you think your goal is too far away and unobtainable then this can cause you to become demotivated thinking ‘I’ll never get there anyway so what’s the point’. Occasionally others can sabotage your motivation too by saying things like ‘you’ve changed’ or that you’re becoming obsessed and need to chill out a bit.
The truth is, you cant be motivated 100% of the time. I’ll be the first to admit I have days where I want to sink my face into a chocolate cake and skip the gym in favor of a box set binge. The thing is, you can’t let these moments win. If you truly want to reach your goals you have to be disciplined to get the job done, even when you don’t feel like doing it.
Changing your training plan and diet can help to keep you on track. Variety is the spice of life as they say so ensure you switch things up. Try something new to give you a boost when you feel like you’re getting bored. If possible, get a training partner to train with you sometimes. Having a solid routine that you stick to can help to keep you on track as well. This ensures that even when you don’t feel like doing something, you still get it done because thats simply your daily routine. I think Barbara is going to do a video blog on this 🙂
You have to find your ‘why’. Why do you want to get fitter? Lose body fat? Get stronger? It can’t just be ‘because I want to look good in clothes’ either. Your reason for being on a fitness journey needs to be more than about how you want to look, it needs to include how you want to FEEL as well. You have to dig deeper than a generic answer. Why do you want to look good your clothes? Because it’ll make you feel more body confident, make you feel more attractive, more comfortable in your skin? Maybe you’re pissed off with being self conscious in your work uniform. Is it because it will make you feel proud of yourself, that FINALLY you did it after years of talking about it. Perhaps you want to be more active and healthier so that you can keep up with your kids? Maybe you’ve never worn a bikini on a beach holiday before and you want to achieve this because you never thought you could. You have to find your why because when you lack motivation, your goal should be a strong enough feeling to give you a kick up the ass when you need it.
Finding your why and visualizing how you are going to feel once you get there should be something you go through in your mind every day to keep that fire burning. If you truly understand why you are doing something, it’ll make dealing with the hard times that little bit easier.
Why are you on your journey? i’d love to know!
